Machholz 96P returns

Periodic comet 96P Machholz is inbound on its return journey around the sun. It has been detected by some ground based observers already, the last I can find says it is already at magnitude 13 in early morning southern skies.

This comet is very active and has been seen to have very long Ion and dust tails. These images are from the last return, 2007 April, which was seen in the STEREO HIA solar imager.

New SWAN Comet

A newly discovered Kreutz comet as seen in STEREO HI1B.
Lovejoy is right , SWAN-VB is left.
This SWAN comet is approaching the sun now and unlikely to survive.
Interesting tail dynamics as a CME  passes by.
A split tail results, ION's and Dust?
The SWAN comet fades away on close approach to the sun.

Comet 45P in STEREO

Comet 45P is crossing STEREO HI2A imager showing tail dynamics. This sequence is across four days. It will get bigger and brighter as the comet will pass approx 0.18au from STEREO A.
Image data courtesy of STEREO/SECCHI/NASA.
The tail extends and becomes more dynamic in images over the 09/23-30.
Several CME plumes are passing by.

 The big picture,

STEREO Images

Fun with Google Picasa and Stereo images I have made since 2007. Some maybe from STEREO/SECCHI/NASA so credit and copyright to them. The rest are mine so you just have to pick which ones. 8)
